The competition proposes an affordable design challenge in the U.K. — the idea can further multiply in various areas. The idea is to design modular dwellings at a budget to raise the housing stock which people can afford.

An international architectural design competition platform UNI.xyz is seeking inspiring concepts that will redesign sustainable housing that overcome the housing crisis in the U.K.

UNI is hosting a competition based on a Living Hub – a challenge inviting architects, designers, and space enthusiasts. The idea is to create affordable housing for homeless people with their necessities at an affordable price range.

There are various reasons why the housing crisis exists around the world. But what is common in all is the fact that they’re unaffordable. The basic requirement of a shelter is often unaffordable to millions across the world. People stay either in small temporary houses or on the streets where they are provided with nothing. This has been observed in the best of the cities to the developing ones.

The United Kingdom is one of the many names that we hear when there is a listing of the places where the cost of living is very high; which is not possible for everyone to meet and is causing a large number of people to get homeless amidst a well-developed city.

In the UK itself, it is estimated that about a million people today reside on the roadsides and in public spaces. The people aren’t able to withstand the cost of living in the main cities. And there is no other choice left for them but to move to the streets. There is less moderate-level housing that offers refuge to these people at a lower cost. And as there are no measures taken it is causing this problem to increase to a considerable level and is estimated to increase as people migrate more.

The challenge is to create an affordable housing design that provides people with a basic livable facility for people. The design is aimed to provide the basic spaces that are needed for survival in the city. Along with other necessary spaces that are accommodated in the affordable price range.

“In this competition, the issue of homelessness is far more complicated due to several layers of societies involved in this issue. However, the intent of this challenge is to generate thought and create dialogues that are solution-centric using idea competition as a vehicle,” says Curatorial Committee of UNI.

Organizers are asking the participants to explore how can we provide housing at the basic level which is required for functioning and living? Which material and construction technology should choose for affordable housing for a large number of people at this economic group? What kind of spaces helps in the multiplicity of prototyped in various areas as per the needs in such financially constrained conditions? How wider socio-cultural, economic, and environmental concerns can be addressed in this design approach?

Entries will be reviewed by multiple professionals from the architectural field including Luke Tozer from Pitman Tozer Architects.

The top three designs will be awarded cash prizes of $6000 (First prize); $1400 (Second prize); and $600 (Third prize) and special mentions will be awarded with $600. For accurate prizes and winnings, refer to the grants page of the competition. Submissions for Living hub design competition closes on 17th March 2022, 8:30 PM GMT+05:30
